Original early 1900's postcard of a Maypole Dairy Co. Ltd store and staff. The Maypole Dairy chain of shops supplied dairy products at affordable prices in working class areas. There is an Altham tea company ad sign over the door. Postcard is dated 4 July 1921 on reverse, Yorkshire, England ,
4 July 1921 written on reverse also Master Ravell and Ernest. Master Revell is the boy marked with a cross on the right. The Altham tea company advertised in the window operated in Yorkshire and Lancashire. In 1924 Home and Colonial bought the share capital of Maypole Dairies of Wolverhampton from the Watson family. Maypole Dairies were an early chain of British dairies who rose to be the biggest employer in Britain[citation needed] and are also noted as the first people to promote the widespread use of margarine as an alternative to butter, originally under the name of Butterine but following legal action protecting this name was known as margarine from 1887. The company was a high-volume, low-margin company, providing dairy products at very affordable prices, and they focussed on working class areas. Source: Wikipedia.
