He was graduated at Prince-ton in 1825, andreceived the de-gree of LL. that col-lege in 1857. Hestudied law inLitchfield, Conn.,and was admit-ted to the bar in1830, beginninghis practice inTrenton, N. 1837 he waselected to thestate council (asthe senate wasthen called), be-ing made chair-man of the ju-diciary committeethe supreme court of the state in 1838. and in 1S42. He became associate judge of 114 DAZA DEAN - appointed to till a vacancy in the U. S. appointment was confirmed by the legislaturein lS4-\ and he was also elected for the whole the senate debates on the Oregon question, thetariff, annexation of Texas, and the Mexican took the position of a free-soil whig;. He wasthe friend and adviser of Presidenl Taylor, andopposed the fugitive-slave bill, but advocated theadmission of California as a free state, and the abo-lition of slavery in the District of Columbia. Inbe was nominated bythenewly formed repub-lican party for vice-president. In March, 1857, he s made attorney-general for the stateof New. - v. and hold that office until 1861, when Presi-dent Lincoln appointed him minister to Prance,whore he remained until hisdeath.—His Lewis, who was graduated at Princeton in1858, and practised law in Trenton, was appointedby President Arthur minister to the Net
