The nest now lying be-fore me, is composed of much dry grass and cows hair,placed in layers one over another. The first, or outercoat, is dead grass ; the next hair; then another of finergrass; and upon that the lining, which is wholly diameter of the cavity is-three inches, the depthnot quite one inch. This bird seems very indifferentwith regard to the beauty of her nest, the materials be-ing hurried together in a very careless and negligentmanner; and, apparently, with great dispatch. Theeggs are five or six, of a glossy blue, and sometimeshave a few latent dark spots near the larger end. TheWhinchat has two or three broods in a ^^.^D^noQE: MA USA 79MOTACILLA SYLVIA. Syst. X he bill is black at the point; dusky at the base : themouth, orange-colour ; the iris of the eyes, brown ; thepupil, large and black ; the cheeks are olive-brown ;the head and back, red-brown, inclining a little to anolive-colour; the feathers of the tail are dusky, withred-brown edges, except the two outmost feathers oneach side, which have their outer webs white. Thequill and covert feathers of the wings are dusky, withred-brown edges, except the first quill, which has itsouter border white. The throat is white, thickly cov-^ered with short feathers; which, when he sings, riselike a ruff round the base of the lower chap.
