The solid part of the stew is dried, crushed, sifted, andsold as a base for fertilizers. Of course it is supposed that nothing but garbagegoes into these city digesters. But, strange to say, when 56 TOWN AND CITY it comes to the sifting, all sorts of things turn up,—silverware, boots and shoes, cans, jewelry, and falseteeth. Dr. Woodbury says that hairpins are the worst:they clog the sifting machine. Yet so many are foundin it that they are picked out by the ton and sold to thewire works to be used again. These things get into the digesters because care-less people have tossed them into their garbage that when things are put into the wrong cansome one has twice as much trouble at the other man who is most loyal to his city
