10th September, 2014, Aberystwyth, Wales, UK. Members of the three unions at the National Library of Wales – Prospect, PCS, and FDA – join together for a day of industrial action to draw attention to the institution’s predicament. Library staff have not received a consolidated pay rise (that is, a permanent pay rise that counts towards pension contributions) since 2009, which has resulted in a 20% real-terms drop in the value of their wages. By now a number of Library staff are earning less than the Living Wage, the minimum the Welsh Government has stated that public sector workers should be paid. The national institution is losing skilled and experienced staff, raising concerns about the long term future of an institution.
