Sir Walter Raleigh's conquest of the city of St. Joseph, Trinidad. Although the Spanish remained the dominant power in the New World during the sixteenth century, after about 1550 challengers began to appear. England and France, jealous of Spain but also weaker, began to allow their sea captains to make piratical raids on Spain's treasure ships and on her colonies.
