The cupolas for small foundry workhave 6o-inch shells, and for the large foundry have 72- successful operation several years with extraordinaryresults, as may be seen by reference to the followingtable, in which the fuel for bed is included and no creditgiven for coke in drop. The theory in working out this tueyer was:— First—To get the greatest amount of air dehvered intothe cupola at a minimum pressure. Second—To keep the melting zone as low as possible. Third—That the air supplied shall as near as possiblespread to the full section of SCENh: IN MACHINE SHOP—WALKER MANUFACTURING COMPANY. inch and S4-inch shells, each lined to 52, 60 and 72 inchesinside diameters respectively. They are supplied withWalkers patent doors, balanced with automatic clutch tohold them in vertical position when dropped, so as not towarp and burn the edges of door in the drop. They arealso supplied with a continuous blast breeching and con-tinuous tueyer in the form of vertical slots, i inch bv 4inches, i}( inches by 5 inches, and i>^ inches by 6inches, for the respective sized cupolas. This form oftueyer is the result of man} experiments and muchthought by Mr. Walker, and has been adopted and in How near these points are complied with can only beappreciated by the pleasure afforded in running suchcupolas, and seeing the results. A 3-cylinder verticalblowing engine supplies the blast for the cupolas. Theair cylinders are 4S-inch bore by 30-inch stroke. Theair valves have a positive motion, worked with eccen
