McDonnell Douglas DC10, KC10 MilitaryVarient at RAF Leuchars in Fife, Scotland. GAV 1080-37
Production of the DC-10 ended in 1989 with 386 delivered to airlines and 60 to the Air Force as air-to-air refueling tankers, designated the KC-10 Extender. The largest operator of the DC-10 is US cargo airline FedEx Express. The DC-10 was succeeded by the related McDonnell Douglas MD-11. Boeing, who had merged with McDonnell Douglas in the 1990s, conducted an upgrade program for the DC-10s, equipping several with a glass cockpit, leading to the re-designation as MD-10s. Non-airline operators include the Royal Netherlands Air Force with three DC-10-30CF-based KDC-10 tanker aircraft, the USAF with its 59 KC-10s, and the 10 Tanker Air Carrier with its modified DC-10-10 used for fighting wildfires.
