Reconstructed Large-Pit Dwelling with a wooden watch tower in the background at the Sannai-Maruyama Site, a Jomon era settlement

This is a reconstruction of a main large pit dwelling and what is believed to be a wooden watch tower at the Sannai-Maruyama Jomon Site. The Sannai-Maruyama special historical site features the remains of a large, long-term settlement that lived from the Early to the Middle Jomon period (from approximately 5,500 to 4,000 years ago). Excavation at the site started in 1992. Since then many pit-dwellings, burial pits, burial jars for children, mounds, remains of large and regular-sized pillar-supported building, storage pits, clay mining pits, and remains of roads have been found. These findings revealed how the Jomon people lived at that time.
