The break between thetungsten contacts occurs a very short time afterward—as soon as the bend of the contact carrying spring istaken up. The result of this sequence of contact separations issuch that if the tungsten contacts should be oxidized tosuch an extent at starting that the high resistance ofthe oxide makes the magneto inoperative, the completedcircuit through the silver contacts which do not oxidizereadily will allow the magneto to function and the sparkwill be produced when the silver contacts separate. Theengine will therefore start up on the action of the silvercontacts. After a few revolutions of the engine the mechanicalaction between the tungsten contacts of the interrupter LATCH CATCH 2. It therefore follows that thetungsten contacts operate for running service. All the arcing and welding action of service is takenup by the tungsten contacts, and the silver contacts arethus protected during the running service, and they donot function electrically again until the tungsten con-tacts again become inoperative except to carry a partof the primary generated current. The action of thisinterrupter is entirely automatic. The only objection to this type of interrupter lies inthe fact that the trade has not been educated to theadjustment of this device, and it would no doubt be con-siderable o£ a task for a layman to make the adjust-ments of this mechanism properly and intelligently.
