Thehorse-drawn apparatus comprises 53 engines, 66 com-bination wagons, 3 hose reels, 4 chemical engines, 15trucks and 6 battalion chiefs carriages. The motor ap-paratus consists of 4 engines. 5 combination wagons, 1chemical engine, 3 trucks, 2 water towers, 3 high pres-sure wagons, 5 battalion chiefs automobiles, each carry-ing a chemical tank, and 1 automobiles, one for thechief and one for the deputy chief. The bureau has in 36 MUNICIPAL JOURNAL Vol. XXXVII, No. .MARKET S-l\ KyllIMKNT service 100,000 feet of 2j2-inch hose. 1.^,000 feet of i/j-iiich hose, and 34,200 feet of .i/j-inch anil 1,200 feet of 1-inch chemical hose. The department owns 487 horses, but only 267 are inactual service, the others being in reserve. When ap-paratus is motorized, the horses previously used areturned into the city stables for reserve use. There is one fire boat, the Edwin S. Stuart, to protectthe long water front on the Delaware river. This boatis 115 feet long, 23 feet beam, 150 tons gross, or net. The pumps are of Clapp & Jones manufac-ture, 9,000 gallons capacity. In addition to the fire boat,there are four police boats equipped with fire pumps. There are 2 high pressure districts which cover about50 square miles. The fire alarm system is of Gamewellmanufacture, and comprises 691 boxes on the under-ground and 1,279 on the overhead system and 224auxiliary boxes.
