A horn sounds a motto theme, which occurs through-out the symphony and may be regarded as the germ of the work. Thereis another motive to which the English horn joins material. The mainbody of the movement has a first theme (flute and clarinet) derivedfrom the motto. The second theme is given to the violins. A newthematic idea is sung by the oboe. Towards the end, the horn mottoreturns. A fanfare for brass brings the end. II. Scherzo, Anime, vif, B-flat major, 6-16. After a short intro-duction, oboe and clarinet have a figure that is largely used. A melodicsentence, 9-8, is given to violins. There is a middle section, tres tran-quillo.
