Mr. Smith began his business career in the engineering depart-ment of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and became intime resident engineer of that company in the Mahanoy miningdistrict. In 1865 he resigned that place, and for the next fouryears was general manager of the Philadelphia Sugar few years of railroad and mining work as consulting engineerof various companies followed, and in 1872 he went toEurope in the interest of some railroad enterprises.
