Common names: welwitschia, tumboa, n'tumbo (Angolan), tweeblaarkanniedood (Afr.), !kharos (Nama/Damara), nyanka (Damara), khurub (Nama), onyanga (Herero). Welwitschia mirabilis is named after the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch (1806-1872) who discovered it in 1859. Distribution: Namibia desert in Namibia and Angola. Can live for over 1000 years. Conservation Status: Rated as Near Threatened (NT) according to IUCN Red List criteria.
