MIDDLESBROUGH DOCK

Middlesbrough Dock was once at the heart of Teesside's industrial powerhouse and operated on the River Tees from 1839 to 1980. Between 1869 and 1902, following numerous enlargement projects, the water area inside tripled in size from under 9 acres to 25. This was perhaps the heyday of Middlesbrough Dock in the late Victorian and Edwardian period up to the Great War. After ever-increasing competition from road haulage and decades of change in the economic climate, closure was eventually announced in September 1979 to be effective from July 1980. Temenos is the title of the art installation designed by sculptor Anish Kapoor that now dominates the entrance to the slowly re-developing Dock. Two steel rings pull between them a delicate mesh of steel cables which are suspended above the dockside, dominating the post-industrial landscape. Flanking the sculpture are the Riverside Stadium, home of Middlesbrough Football Club, and the industrial crane owned by Able UK.
