Hilary Deacon (1936-2010), South African archaeologist, supervising his PhD student Sarah Warz. Deacon was Head of the Archaeology Department at Stellenbosch University, South Africa from 1971 to 2000. He was best known for his work as the principal researcher at the Klasies River Caves, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. One of the oldest known sites of anatomically modern humans. Deacon authored a number of publications on African archaeology and the emergence of modern humans.
