Textile raw materials and their conversion into yarns : (the study of the raw materials and the technology of the spinning process) a text-book for textile, trade and higher technical schools, as also for self-instruction ; based upon the ordinary syllabus and curriculum of the Imperial and Royal Austrian weaving schools. Fig. 277.—Thread Opener, with Workers, Fancy Roller and Roller Brush(vertical section). Another type is shown in Fig. 277. Here two sets of feedrollers, b, c, b^, q, deliver the material to the Hcker-in, which29 4SO TEXTILE RAW MATERIALS. gives it up to the cylinder, the latter then conveying it to theworkers, A^ to A^, for further disintegration. The quick fancyroller, V (serving as a stripper) removes the material from A^,and returns it to the cylinder, whilst / acts as a doffer andthrows the separated fibres out at g. Liberated particles ofdust and dirt escape through a grid, /, and fall to the ground, and the fly from the fancy roller is caught by the roller,/z, andreturned to the main Fig. 278.—Thread Opener, with Workers, Fancy Roller and Doffer(vertical section). Fig. 278 represents a more efficient opener than either ofthe foregoing, since it contains a larger number of rollers, andtherefore a larger area of working surface. The openedmaterial, instead of being flung out loose by a roller brush, isremoved as a coherent fleece by the action of an oscillatingdoffer comb. Latterly, double openers (Fig. 279) resembling doublecarding engines have come more into favour. The fancyrollers are fitted with coarse card clothing, and all the otherswith saw teeth.
