Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, UK: on a hot summer’s day in 1935, five Yorkshire youngsters cluster around “The Modern Pied Piper”, the A. Coletta & Sons ice cream van touring the streets of Huddersfield under the slogan: “Purity Guaranteed”. Two boys stand on the van’s running board as one takes a vanilla cornet or cone from the ice cream vendor, who looks at the camera. Two more boys and a girl stand watching the transaction. Two of the boys wear one-piece bathing costumes. Huddersfield is a large former mill town in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire. This monochrome photograph was taken in 1935 by George and Kathleen Blenkhorn of Huddersfield and has been scanned direct from an original print in a Blenkhorn family album. One of the boys pictured is probably the couple’s only son, George, who was born in 1931.
