Obesity. A pair of callipers is used to measure the skin-fold thickness at the upper arm of an obese woman to assess body fat content. A person is considered obese when their body weight is at least 20% more than the maximum desirable amount for their particular height. About a third of the UK adult population is considered overweight, but only 5% are obese. The cause of obesity is not always clear: some people simply eat too much while others are thought to become obese due to genetic factors, low metabolic rate or physical inactivity. Calliper measurement is more common in specialist clinics such as endocrinology (hormone) and weight management clinics.
