CARDIFF, UK. 6 February 2018. Young man using Netflix. With the internet becoming increasingly easier to access, people are spending more and more free time using streaming websites such as Netflix to binge watch tv programmes and films. No longer do the public have to wait a whole week to watch the next epsiode of their favourite show, instead they can sit and watch the entire series at the click of a button, whenever they wish. Although the introduction of streaming services has been very convenient considering that everyone has unique routines and work hours, the reliance upon them as a source of entertainment is decreasing the popularity of the television, especially amongst the younger generation who instead opt to watch movies on their laptops. The apps that can be downloaded onto various devices makes binge watching a very on-the-go and portable option, but also an unhealthy one. Netflix reportedly checked up on one of its users recently when they watched the entire series of The Office (that’s about 200 episodes) in two weeks. Supposedly the reason for this is the subscriber’s insomnia. But many feel that the increase in binge watching is unhealthy for people, and it also distracts them from living their daily lives. In conclusion, it’s okay every once in a while, but resist the black hole of binge watching for days upon end for the sake of both your health and your sanity. © Jessica Gwynne
