View S of the W half of Auchagallon cairn & stone circle, Arran, Scotland, UK, showing the largest of the 15 upright stones. The site stands on a terrace above the old shore line overlooking Machrie Bay & Kilbrannan Sound to Kintyre. The stones, mainly red sandstone, are graded up in height from E to W where there is a setting of two tall stones flanking a squatter one reminiscent of a recumbent stone circle. The uprights may have formed the retaining kerb of a Bronze Age round cairn, or a freestanding circle around a central burial. Around 1910 Archibald Sim, tenant farmer at Auchagallon, recalled "many years ago" (in the C19th) a burial cist being uncovered at the centre of the circle which he described as flat & free of stones. The present mound is partly made up of modern field clearance, original cairn stones may have been robbed for building. The site has good views S to Machrie Moor where there is a similar monument called Moss Farm Road Stone Circle.
