Penumbral lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon is only partially shaded by the Earth, moving into a region of the Earth's shadow known as the penumbra. When this happens, the Moon darkens depending on how much of the solar disk is eclipsed by the Earth. The Moon does not turn orange as occurs during a total lunar eclipse (due to the Earth's umbra).
