Scenic view of Ponte Vecchio medieval bridge with a couple enjoying breakfast on the bank of the Arno River in autumn, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the symbols of the city of Florence and one of the most famous bridges in the world. Rebuilt in 1345 after several collapses and floods, in 1442 the city authority to safeguard the cleanliness and decorum, forced the "beccai" (butchers) to gather in the shops on Ponte Vecchio to make them a little isolated from the buildings and houses of the center. The shops of the butchers were then occupied by goldsmiths and jewelers in 1593 by order of Ferdinando I, who disliked a not noble trade and with unpleasant smells under the windows of the suspended corridor built by the architect Giorgio Vasari in 1565 ("Vasari's corridor"). Nowadays Ponte Vecchio is also known as "the bridge of goldsmiths".
