Brain lining. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the swollen tips of ependymal cells from the brain of a foetus. These secretory cells line the ventricular system of the brain and the spinal cord. Ependyma is one of the four types of neuroglia (glial cells) in the central nervous system (CNS). It is involved in the production of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In adults these cells have cilia and microvilli (hair-like structures) on their surface. Magnification: x1000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
