Chateau de Querrieu, General Rawlinson's HQ during the Battle of the Somme in the Great War


The chateau and grounds, which can be found on the Albert-Amiens road, have a history dating back to Roman times as the numerous artefacts and objects that have been found here can attest to. The chateau was transformed in the 19th century, during the Romantic era. During the First World War, General Rawlinson set up headquarters for his 4th army in the chateau and it was here that the famous but fatal order of attack was given for 1st July 1916 at , by General Haig, Commander-in-Chief of the British Armies. King George V, accompanied by his son the Prince of Wales, visited the chateau on 10th August 1916 to award medals to two French generals.
