Fig tree fabric. Close-up of fabric made using bark from an African fig (Ficus natalensis) tree. The fabric, known as barkcloth, uses bark from trees grown in Uganda. The inner bark of the tree is harvested during the wet season and beaten with mallets. The pulp is then flattened and dried to produce a leathery material that is strong and flexible. It can be used for fashion, furniture, interior decoration, shoes, bags and other accessories.
