Geographical range.âBoreal zone of mountains of southern and Lower California. Description.âThree specimens in the U. S. National Museum col- lection (Nos. ilflf, ilf^f, and fffff), from the San Pedro Martir Mountains, Lower Califor- nia, collected by Mr. Charles H. Townsend, in April and May, 1889, have the pelage short and coarse, and are dis- tinctly paler and more hoary than S. hudsonicus ' califor- nicus from central Califor- nia. The April specimen (No. 18265, female adult) has the reddish vertebral stripe tolerably distinct, with yellowish on nape and reddish on rump; but in the two May specimens, proba- bly males, though the sex is not indicated, this is less dis- tinct, the color being pepper- and - salt, suffused with tawny ochraceous above. In all three specimens the black stripe at the side is strongly marked, as much so as in the subspecies californic-iis. The ears are heavily tufted with black. The under parts are white, with plumbeous at base. Feet yellowish white. All three are in winter coat, but molting had begun in No. 18267 and pro- ceeded irregul
