Mitosis. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of HeLa cancer culture cells. Their nuclei are red and the microtubules of their cytoskeletons are green. Two cells are undergoing mitotic cell division. The chromosomes (red) are aligned along the middle of the cell at lower centre during the metaphase stage of mitosis, while they are separ- ating in the cell at upper left (late anaphase). HeLa cells are named after Henrietta Lacks, from whom they were taken. In immunofluorescence, antibodies are used to attach fluorescent dyes to specific cell tissues. Here, the nuclei have been stained with propidium iodide and the microtubules with anti-tubulin antibody. Magnification unknown.
