A garden surrounded by a mud wall eight feet high wasselected, and in two days the men, working under Sapper super-vision, had put the garden in a very excellent condition ofdefence. Water was let into the garden from an irrigationchannel outside, and means were adopted to prevent the supplybeing cut off. The work was no sooner done than the wholedetachment was ordered back to Jellalahad, it being considereddangerous at head-quarters to have such a small force in theenemys country cut off from support by the
