There is no record of the ultimate shortening, but good union andfree motion of the joint were obtained. Cheyne, in a case of recent fracture, exposed the fragments through alongitudinal iucision made over the anterior aspect of the joint, exposed the 1278 OPERATIVE SURGERY. fracture, made extension and internal rotation on the limb, and with thefingers in the wound manipulated the fragments into place; then a smalllongitudinal incision was made over the outer side of the trochanter major, and two canals drilled through the fragments at a distance of half an inchapart. Ivory pegs were then driven through the holes made by the drill, and the limb immobilized. Good union and motion were obtained, butthere is no record of measurements of the limb. In operating upon cases of ununited fracture the refreshing of the endsof the fragments is a necessary step in the technique. Meyer\ in a case of unun
