At the time the civil war broke out he was on the home farm inDarke county, Ohio, to which place his father had moved from Miami:county and cleared and improved a tract of land. Young Brants patriotism,was at once aroused and he was among the first to place his name on the list,of volunteers. In April, 1861, at the age of twenty-two years, he enlisted,,at Gettysburg, Ohio, as a private in Company I\, Eleventh Ohio VolunteerInfantry, for three months.
