Carina Nebula pillar, Hubble Space Telescope image. Tip of a three-light-year-long pillar of gas and dust within the Carina nebula. The pillar is sculpted by radiation and streams of charged particles from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. In the pillar itself new stars are forming. The Carina Nebula is 7500 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Carina. Image obtained by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 on 24th to 30th July 2009. For this image in infrared, see C021/9246.
