Carter, of the New York Bar, was born inLancaster, Mass., on October 14, 1827, and is a son ofSolomon and Elizabeth White Carter. His preparatoryeducation was gained at the Derby Academy, Hingham,Mass. He entered Harvard College and. after a brilliantcourse, during which he won prizes for a dissertation inLatin and two others for Essays, was graduated with the r ?—^ ?—. JAMES C. CARTER. Bachelor of .Vns degree in the class of 1850. His legaltraining was acc}uired in the law department of the sameinstitution, from which he graduated three years later as aBachelor of Laws. He subsequently had the Doctor ofLaws honor conferred on him by that Law School in Carter was admitted to the Bar in 1853 and his profes-sional career has been one of distinction and success. Heis recognized as one of Americas ablest lawyers and pos-sesses one of the finest legal minds this country has everproduced. His counsel is sought in controversies involvingnational and international questions of law. His recentbrilliant argument as counsel for the United States in theAlaska Seal International Controversy was but an instanceof his many great legal achievements.
