Mycobacterium leprae (small red rods), light micrograph. Mostly found in warm tropical countries, this bacterium causes leprosy. It is a rod-shaped bacterium that closely resembles Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It replicates in skin and nerve cells, and severe infection may result in the loss of the extremities (nose, fingers, toes). M. leprae is usually spread from person to person in respiratory droplets.
