Vintage lithograph print depicting the Battle of Fort Sumter (April 12 - 13 1861) - the bombardment of the fort at the entrance to the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina, that started the American Civil War. South Carolina had demanded that the US Army leave the fort following the secession of several states from the Union and launched an artillery attack when the garrison refused. The Union forces inside eventually surrendered and left after a 34-hour Confederate bombardment. Print circa 1860s by Currier & Ives.
