Lambton Castle, County Durham, England. Crop to 6x4 format of antique engraving by W. Le Petit (William Alexander Le Petit, active 1829 - 1857), from a drawing by Thomas Allom (1804 - 1872). The engraving appeared in ‘Durham and Northumberland their Lake and Mountain Scenery etc.’, published by Fisher & Jackson in the 1830s, and was later coloured by hand. The full title of the publication in which this engraving appeared was: ‘Durham and Northumberland their Lake and Mountain Scenery etc., illustrated from Drawings on the Spot by Thomas Allom with Descriptions by Thomas Rose’. It was a volume of ‘Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland illustrated ... with historical and topological descriptions, by Thomas Rose’, issued in annual volumes from 1832-1835. Thomas Allom was an English architect, artist and illustrator and founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Lambton Castle is ancestral seat of the Lambton family, Earls of Durham. Located between Sunderland and Chester-le-Street, it was constructed in the early 1800s by John Lambton (1792 - 1840), 1st Earl of Durham and one-time Governor General of Canada. The castle was designed by architects John Bonomi the Elder and his son Ignatius and built in the style of a Norman castle around an existing mansion built in the 1600s, Harrington Hall. Today, Lambton Castle is within Lambton Park, a working country estate, which is only open to the public at certain times. In 2015, approval was given to redevelop the Park and build new homes, offices and retail space. The castle is being restored with funds from the new development.
