Carolina Parrot from W. T. Greene Parrots In Captivity, George Bell and Sons, 1884 - 1887. Wood engraving by Benjamin Fawcett after drawings by Carolina parakeet - Conuropsis carolinensis - or Carolina conure was a parakeet of old growth forest in the eastern, midwest and plains states of the USA. It was the only indigenous parrot within its range. The last confirmed sighting in the wild was in 1910. The last known specimen died in captivity at Cincinnati Zoo in 1918. By1939 it was declared extinct. Reasons for extinction include habitat destruction and hunting as a pest. It was not hunted for food as the species appeared to have been toxic because of their diet of cockleburs, with Audubon reporting cats dying after eating them.
