Catulussoldiers led them to the field of battle to see the dead, andclearly proved that they were killed by their javelins, becauseCatulus had taken care to have the shafts inscribed with hisname. Nevertheless, the whole honor of the day wasascribed to Marius, on account of his former victory and hispresent authority. Nay, such was the applause of the popu-lace, that they called him the third founder of Rome, ashaving rescued her from a danger not less dreadful than thatfrom the Gauls.—
