Light micrograph of the ciliate protozoan Frontonia sp., showing its large contractile vacuole, surrounded by radiating channels. The contractile vacuole acts as an osmotic regulator, controlling the flow of water across the ciliate's membrane. Excess water collects in the channels, drains into the vacuole & is then discharged through a pore at the surface. Magnification unknown.
