Thecrying need is for a more effective legal mechanism tordetermining betterments and damages in condemnationof setbacks, and an effort is being made toward securinglegislation that will enable the town to deal effectively,equitably, and economically with this aspect ot the build-ing-line problem. The Board has considered the improvement of the vil-lage square and has requested suggestions for the improve-ment ot the easterly entrance to the town. A start hasbeen made in investigations with respect to conditionswhich may be injurious to the public health or otherwiseinjurious in and about rented dwellings. It has givenconsiderable study from time to time to the question otmetropolitan thoroughfares as they affect the town otBrookline, and is cooperating with several committees otthe metropolitan district. Study has also been given toseveral street extensions and connections with the idea otimproving the system ot primary and secondary thorough-fares within the town.
