Actsii. 7-11. (89) CHAPTER VII. NEW ACQUAINTANCES IN HEAVEN. Besides the recognition of friendswhom we knew and loved on earth,we shall also form new acquaintancesin heaven. Heaven is inhabited bythe holy angels—an innumerable host,who were created before the worldwas made, and who lost not theirestate, like the fallen angels. Theyare blessed, happy and immortalbeings, whom God employs as hisministering spirits. Some of themare named in the Bible. The arch-angel Michael is one of them, whocast Satan into the bottomless pit and (90). THE ANNUNCIATION. H. HOFMANN. FRIENDS IN HEAVEN bound him in adamantine chains ;and the archangel Gabriel, whoannounced to the Virgin Mary thatshe should become the mother ofthe promised Messiah. The angelsare distinguished into principalitiesand powers, into Cherubim and Sera-phim. We shall become personallyacquainted with them and conversewith them. They can relate to usthe story of the creation of theheavens and the earth, when themorning stars sang together and allthe sons of God shouted for joy. And there we shall also meet the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs and reformers. There I expect to meet Adam and Eve, and they can 6 (93) give us a description of Paradise, be-fore it was entered and cursed by sin;there I expect to meet Noah andconverse with him; the surging- ofthe flood is still fresh in his memory ;there I expect to meet Abraham, thatman of mighty faith
