BRIGADIER GENERAL FRANCIS MARION DRAKE. 159 Brigadier General FRANCIS MARION DRAKE. Was born in Rushville, Illinois, December 30,1830. He was the second son of John Adams Drakeand Harriet Jane (ONeal) Drake, natives of NashCounty, North Carolina. General Drake was of English descent, andtraced his famil}^ back to a brother of Sir FrancisDrake. He was also a descendant of the illustriousAdams family. His fathers family located in Iowain 1837, ^^^ General Drake resided in that State dur-ing his life. He received a good business education, and ledan active, successful business life. During the ex-citement that followed the discovery of gold in Cali-fornia, he crossed the plains twice with ox-trains,taking with him a drove of cattle each time. Hewas a born leader of men, as shown by the factthat the first time he crossed the plains—though buttwent}^ years old—he was made Captain of the train.
