View across canal towards private home. Project X, Almere, Netherlands. Architect: Rene van Zuuk, 2008.

Behind the somewhat mysterious name ‘Project X', hides the design of René van Zuuk and his family's own residence. The villa with a small office space is located right next to the architect's former residence Psyche in Almere's The Fantasy district, an area for experimental housing. The first home now serves as the firm’s offices and is connected to the family home by a garden. the new home is located right on the side of a canal and the bottom floor is dropped down to give the feeling of living on water. the upper portion of the home is on ground level and features a cladding that is made up of cement tiles featuring a branch patter. windows are incorporated wherever possible to let light in. thin windows separate the floors while the bottom floor features an full-height glazing. The home’s form and various design decisions were influenced in large part by the specifications of the Dutch building decree.
