PLATE LL WOUNDS OF VESSELS OF THE NECK 201 an extremely dangerous procedure which has beenattended by disastrous results. Monod and Vanvertscollected five cases, of which four ended figures are not encouraging. For this reason distal ligature is the methodadopted in the vast majority of cases. The ligaturemay be placed at a suitable spot upon the carotidor subclavian, or simultaneously upon both the latter case the vessels are ligatured at thesame operation, beginning with the carotid. Byadopting this sequence cerebral embolism, due to theback-eddy of the blood in the aneurism after ligatureof the subclavian, is excluded. It is hardly necessaryto point out that this method is infinitely less danger-ous than proximal ligature. Monod and Vanvertshave collected sixty-five cases of distal ligature inwhich the mortality did not e
