ST JOHN, US Virgin Islands — The marina at Enighed Pond on St John in the US Virgin Islands. This facility serves as the primary port for car ferries operating between St John and St Thomas, as well as accommodating other large commercial vessels. The marina is a crucial transportation hub for the island, facilitating inter-island travel and commerce.

Photograph by David Coleman. Enighed Pond Marine Facility is a modern marina located in Cruz Bay, the main town on St John, the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. Completed in 2006, this facility was developed to improve maritime transportation infrastructure and alleviate congestion in Cruz Bay's main ferry dock. The marina is specifically designed to handle larger vessels, particularly the car ferries that are vital for transportation between St John and its larger neighbor, St Thomas. The facility features a 260-foot-long concrete pier capable of accommodating multiple vessels simultaneously. It includes a roll-on/roll-off ramp for vehicles, making it ideal for car ferry operations. The marina's design allows for efficient loading and unloading of both passengers and vehicles, streamlining the inter-island transportation process. Enighed Pond, after which the marina is named, was originally a salt pond that was dredged and developed into this marine facility. The project involved significant environmental considerations to minimize impact on the surrounding ecosystem while providing essential infrastructure for the island's transportation needs. In addition to serving car ferries, the Enighed Pond Marine Facility is equipped to handle other commercial vessels, including cargo ships and larger pleasure crafts. This capability is crucial for St John's economy, facilitating the import of goods and supporting the island's tourism industry. The marina's location in Cruz Bay makes it easily accessible for both residents and visitors. It has become an integral part of St John's transportation network, playing a key role in connecting this small island with the rest of the US Virgin Islands and beyond. The facility's development has significantly improved the ease of travel and transportation of goods to and from St John, supporting the island's economy and way of life.
