He was a superior wrestler, andit is said that on one occasion a messenger came down fromNew Salem for him at midnight to visit the latter place towrestle with a man who had overthrown all competitors. Heresponded to the call, laid the champion on his back, and re-turned the same day. Of the Stevensons there were fourbrothers. Edward and Isaac were hatters, and lived and workedin the Hooker house; their shop for felting and dyeing hatswas on the bank of the river below the house.
