THE COLLECTION OF FARES IN THE CITY OF MEXICO The system of collecting fares in the city of Mexico differsradically from that employed in this country, as a slip is handedby the conductor to each passenger as a fare receipt. This re-ceipt shows the date, amount of fare and direction of trip,bears a serial number, and must be retained by the passengeruntil the end of his ride as proof that he has paid his fare. The company has seventeen different rates of fare, varyingfrom 3 cents to 30 cents (Mexican), and being divided betweenfirst and second class. On the city lines there are no second-class cars or fares, the city rate being 6 cents, which at thepresent rate of exchange amounts to a little less than 3 centsgold.
