Light bulb circuit. Circuit showing a lamp (right) connected to one terminal (black wire) of a set of batteries. The voltage supplied from the batteries (top) is 3 volts (a parallel configuration of two pairs of batteries connected in series). However, for current to flow, the circuit needs to be completed by connecting the lamp to the other terminal (red wire). This explains why the lamp's light bulb is not lit.
