The foundation of this work is A Collection of National English Airs, printed bythe Editor in the years 1838-39-40 ; hut that book having been out of print for someyears, and, in the interim, much additional matter collected, it became more easy to re-write the whole, than to make additions. In the present work, the airs that are derivedfrom the old collection and those from new sources are in about equal proportion ; butthe words of many of the former have since been found, and, in some cases, older andbetter copies obtained, as well as additional illustration.
