On the shores of the harbour is a considerable town, comprising many good houses, as well as branches of the consular establishments, and the unfailing Lazaretto. The view we give is taken from the rising ground, near the outer mouth of the harbour; in the distance are seen the prominent features of Athens itself, viz. the Acropolis and Lycabettus; while Pagnes and Pentelicus bound the prospect. The Piraeus is about five or six miles from passing up the road, considerable remains of the celebrated "long walls"are to be perceived, which used in olden time to connect the city with the Piraeus, and which were so important as a defensive work'.
